The team had built a loyal following on a single plant protein, but its second-product ambitions kept colliding with the same wall: every plant protein they tasted was gritty, chalky, and earthy. Their original co-packer leaned on a single-source pea base that left a sandy mouthfeel and a bean-like aftertaste, and review after review compared it unfavorably to the whey shakes their customers were trying to replace.
The bigger problem was nutritional, not just sensory. A pea-only base under-delivered on methionine, while a rice-heavy base ran short on lysine, leaving the amino profile incomplete for the strength and recovery audience the brand wanted to own. Masking the off-notes meant loading the formula with gums and heavy stevia, which only traded grit for a slimy texture and a lingering sweetness.
