Frequently Asked Questions
Which halal certifying bodies do you currently hold marks for, and which do you add per project?
Our manufacturing premises hold an IFANCA halal certification mark with active cert reference and renewal on the standard IFANCA cycle. Additional certifying bodies are added per project against the destination market: JAKIM (Malaysia and JAKIM-recognized cross-corridor), MUI / BPJPH SIHALAL registration (Indonesia, mandatory under UU 33/2014), ESMA per UAE.S 2055-2:2016 (UAE retail), HFA (UK retail), HFCE (EU retail), and MUIS (Singapore). The full cert ID list and expiry dates are released under NDA during the quote stage so your regulatory counsel can verify against the relevant recognized-bodies list directly.
Do you handle JAKIM certification for Malaysia distribution, or do we engage JAKIM separately?
We handle it as part of the project. JAKIM certification for an imported product is processed via the foreign-body recognition route: JAKIM publishes a recognized-bodies list (over 80 international halal certifiers) whose marks JAKIM accepts at port-of-entry without re-audit, plus a direct JAKIM-foreign-applicant pathway for plants that want the JAKIM mark itself. We route your SKU through whichever pathway is cheapest and fastest for your specific HS code and shelf-life profile. Lead time on a JAKIM mark for an established formulation is typically 8-14 weeks from documentation submission.
Can we use bovine collagen in a halal SKU, or do we have to move to marine collagen?
Bovine collagen is permissible if and only if the upstream supplier provides a zabihah halal certificate from a certifying body recognized by your destination market, with an unbroken chain of custody from abattoir through hydrolysis to finished collagen powder. The certificate must be specific to the lot, not to the supplier in general. In practice, halal-zabihah bovine collagen carries a $0.50-$2.00/kg premium over conventional bovine and a 4-6 week sourcing lead time. Marine collagen from scaled fish (tilapia, cod, pangasius) is acceptable under most maddhab interpretations without a slaughter-chain audit and is our default recommendation when collagen type is not commercially load-bearing.
How do you prevent halal / non-halal cross-contamination in a shared manufacturing facility?
Three control layers per MS 1500:2019: physical segregation through scheduled halal production windows with full line clean-down between windows, procedural segregation through dedicated or color-coded halal tooling and segregated halal raw-material storage, and where the certifying body requires it (notably MUI for Indonesian SKUs) najs-removal clean-down protocol with documented sertu / samak procedure on contact surfaces before the halal window opens. A trained halal compliance officer is present on the line, signs the clean-down record, and is named on the batch documentation submitted to the certifying body.
What is the cert audit cycle, and what does cert renewal cost on an ongoing basis?
IFANCA: initial audit at project kick-off, annual renewal audit thereafter; surveillance audits at 6-12 month intervals depending on product risk class. JAKIM: initial audit, surveillance at 6 months, full renewal at 12-24 months depending on plant scope. MUI / BPJPH: 4-year cert validity with annual halal-supervisor surveillance under UU 33/2014. Audit and certifying-body fees are pass-through line items on your project P&L and are quoted explicitly in the project scope; they are not bundled into per-unit pricing. Typical annual renewal cost per SKU per body is in the low-thousands USD range, scaling with plant scope and SKU count.
Vegan HPMC capsule versus halal-gelatin capsule, which do you recommend, and why?
HPMC by default. HPMC (hypromellose, vegetable cellulose) carries no slaughter-chain audit burden, is acceptable to every halal certifying body on our recognized list without further documentation, and is simultaneously kosher and vegan-compatible. Halal-zabihah gelatin is functionally required only in narrow cases (certain soft-gel formulations for fat-soluble actives where HPMC oxygen-permeability is the wrong fit), and even then halal-zabihah fish gelatin is typically the better halal route than bovine. We do not recommend non-zabihah pork or bovine gelatin under any halal SKU scope.
Can a single SKU carry multiple halal marks (for example IFANCA plus JAKIM plus MUI on the same artwork)?
Yes, where the cross-recognition matrix permits and where the artwork has the physical real-estate to display each mark per the issuing body's brand-style guide. IFANCA is cross-recognized by JAKIM, MUIS, and several GCC importers, so an IFANCA-only SKU can ship into many JAKIM and MUIS-gated markets without a second mark on-pack. Indonesia post-2024 requires the BPJPH-issued mark on the principal display panel and is not satisfied by IFANCA alone. We map the minimum mark stack required for your target distribution footprint during the quote stage.
What is the lead time to add halal certification to an existing formulation we already manufacture with you?
For an existing formulation already on a halal-compliant BOM (HPMC capsules or pectin gummies, no porcine or ethanolic ingredients, no non-zabihah animal inputs): typically 6-10 weeks for IFANCA, 8-14 weeks for JAKIM, 12-20 weeks for MUI / BPJPH given Indonesian regulatory processing. For an existing formulation that requires BOM reformulation to remove non-halal inputs: add 4-8 weeks of supplier sourcing and benchtop verification before the certification clock starts. Sample run from the halal-compliant BOM is required for the certifying body audit dossier in most pathways.

Halal Manufacturing: Multi-Authority Certification Coverage
The global halal supplement market is projected to exceed $45 billion by 2028, driven by a Muslim consumer base of nearly 2 billion and tightening import-side regulation in Malaysia (JAKIM), Indonesia (BPJPH / MUI), the UAE (ESMA), and Saudi Arabia (SFDA-recognized bodies). Halal is not a single certification; it is a network of national and regional authorities, each with its own ingredient registry, audit protocol, and label-mark requirements. A product that ships into Malaysia without a JAKIM-recognized mark is not legally marketable, and from October 2024 Indonesia's UU 33/2014 makes BPJPH-registered halal certification mandatory for imported food and supplement products. Our role as your manufacturing partner is to map each target market to the correct certifying body, build the formula and the Halal Quality Management System to satisfy that body, and produce the documentation package the auditor requires.
Coverage breaks down by region: IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America) is the dominant North American mark and is cross-recognized by JAKIM, MUIS Singapore, and several GCC importers. JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) is treated as the gold standard for Southeast Asia, Australia, and the OIC corridor, with reciprocity into over 80 foreign bodies under its recognition list. MUI / BPJPH covers Indonesia and is non-substitutable for that market post-2024. ESMA (UAE) gates the GCC retail channel under UAE.S 2055-2:2016. HFA (Halal Food Authority, UK) and HFCE (Halal Food Council of Europe) carry European retail. MUIS (Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura) is required for Singapore distribution. We hold the IFANCA mark on premises and add per-SKU certification under any of the above as part of your project quote.
Technical formulation rules are stricter than the consumer-facing summary suggests. All capsule shells default to HPMC (vegetable cellulose) so the standard SKU is halal-compliant without a gelatin audit. Where gelatin is functionally required (certain chewable matrices, soft-gels for fat-soluble actives) it must be halal-zabihah bovine, halal-zabihah fish-derived, or marine-sourced from scaled fish (the latter is acceptable under most maddhab interpretations and avoids the slaughter chain entirely). Bovine collagen requires a zabihah certificate from the upstream supplier with an unbroken chain of custody back to the abattoir; we do not accept bovine collagen lots without the supplier's halal certificate of origin attached to the COA. Marine collagen from fish such as tilapia, cod, or pangasius is the lower-friction default. Glycerin must be plant-derived (palm, soy, coconut) or halal-zabihah animal; petroleum-derived synthetic glycerin requires a non-animal-origin declaration. Flavor and color extracts carried in ethanol are flagged at the BOM stage and substituted with glycerin-, propylene-glycol-, or water-based equivalents before any halal lot is scheduled.
Production runs under a Halal Quality Management System aligned with JAKIM MS 1500:2019 (the Malaysian standard adopted by reference across the OIC). The HQMS layer sits on top of our cGMP / 21 CFR Part 111 program and enforces four control gates: (1) ingredient screening against a maintained halal-permitted material register, (2) physical and procedural segregation in shared facility lines through dedicated halal time-windows, line clean-down to a documented najs-removal protocol (samak / sertu where required by the certifying body), and color-coded tooling, (3) batch-level documentation including raw-material halal certificates, line-clearance records, and ID-traceable yield reconciliation, (4) internal audit by a trained halal compliance officer ahead of every external certification audit. Cert renewal cycles are annual for IFANCA and JAKIM, with surveillance audits at 6-12 month intervals depending on body and product class.
Our Manufacturing Process
From initial concept to finished product, every step is managed under one roof with dedicated quality oversight and transparent communication.
Ingredient + Cert Authority Scoping
Halal compliance review against the destination market's certifying body. We map every line on your formula to the IFANCA, JAKIM, MUI, ESMA, HFA, or MUIS permitted-material register, flag any non-conforming inputs (porcine derivatives, non-zabihah animal, ethanolic extracts, undeclared glycerin source), and propose halal-conforming substitutions with cost and lead-time deltas. Output is a halal-conformance BOM plus a recommended certifying body shortlist matched to your target SKUs and regions.
Supplier Documentation Pull + Cross-Cert Matrix
Raw-material halal certificates collected from upstream suppliers with expiry dates verified and cert-body cross-recognition checked against the destination authority's recognized-bodies list. We build a cross-cert matrix per SKU showing which certifying bodies accept which supplier certificates, which inputs need re-certification at the supplier level, and which can be substituted laterally. Documentation is filed against the lot and exported to the certifier in their requested format (JAKIM eHalal portal upload, IFANCA dossier PDF, BPJPH SIHALAL system, etc.).
HQMS Production + Audit-Ready Batch Records
Manufacturing executed under the documented Halal Quality Management System per MS 1500:2019: scheduled halal production windows, najs-removal line clean-down where the certifying body mandates sertu, segregated halal raw-material storage, dedicated or fully-cleaned tooling, and continuous halal-officer oversight on the line. Every batch closes with a halal compliance record (raw-material lot IDs and their cert references, line clean-down sign-off, finished-good reconciliation, COA from the ISO 17025 lab) so the external auditor receives a complete and traceable dossier without rework.
Cert Issuance + Mark Application + Label Compliance
Coordination with the chosen certifying body through their preferred audit channel (JAKIM site audit for new facility scope, IFANCA virtual document audit for an established line, BPJPH halal-supervisor checkpoints for Indonesian SKUs). On approval we apply the correct halal mark to artwork: JAKIM bilingual logo with cert number, IFANCA crescent mark, ESMA UAE.S logo, MUI mark with reg ID, sized and positioned to the body's brand-style guide. Label artwork undergoes a final regulatory pass against the destination market's supplement-labeling rules (FDA Supplement Facts for the US, EU 1169/2011 for EU SKUs, KKM for Malaysia, BPOM for Indonesia) before plate sign-off.

Key Benefits for Your Brand
Every aspect of our halal supplements manufacturing is designed to accelerate your time-to-market while maintaining uncompromising quality standards.
Multi-Body Certification on a Single Production Line
One halal-compliant manufacturing line scoped against the recognized-bodies lists of IFANCA, JAKIM, MUI, ESMA, MUIS, and HFA. A single SKU can carry multiple halal marks where the cross-recognition matrix permits, removing the need to re-formulate per market.
HPMC-Default Capsule Architecture
All standard capsule SKUs ship in HPMC (hypromellose, vegetable cellulose) by default, which sidesteps the halal-zabihah gelatin audit entirely. Gummies use pectin as the gelling agent, eliminating gelatin from that format as well. The default configuration is halal-conforming, kosher-compatible, and vegan-compatible without re-tooling.
MS 1500:2019 HQMS Discipline
Halal Quality Management System aligned with Malaysian Standard MS 1500:2019, the de facto reference standard cited by JAKIM and recognized across the OIC. HQMS layers ingredient registry control, physical segregation, najs-removal protocol, and halal-officer oversight on top of cGMP / 21 CFR Part 111 manufacturing.
Full Chain-of-Custody Documentation
Raw-material halal certificates, supplier cert-body recognition mapping, batch-level production records, line clean-down sign-offs, ISO 17025 COA per lot, and certifier-ready dossier export. The paper trail is built during production, not reconstructed at audit time.
Destination-Market Label Compliance Pass
Halal mark placement audited against the issuing body's brand-style guide and the destination market's supplement-labeling regulation (US FDA Supplement Facts, EU 1169/2011, Malaysia KKM, Indonesia BPOM, GCC GSO 9). Artwork sign-off includes both certifier and regulator requirements in a single review cycle.
