The founder came to Build Your Own Brand after two years of listening to a wellness community vent about the same thing: melatonin worked the first week, then either stopped working or left them foggy until noon. She kept hearing the words "groggy," "hungover," and "I think I'm dependent on it now." The problem was that "melatonin-free sleep" is far harder to formulate than melatonin-anything. On top of the formulation puzzle, her entire business model depended on trust. She was launching subscription-first, which only works if customers reorder month after month, and a sleep audience is unforgiving: one bad night, one chalky capsule, one unverifiable label claim, and the cancellation follows the next morning. She needed third-party testing she could put on the product page, a purity story she could defend, and a formula consistent enough that month three felt exactly like month one.
Build Your Own Brand's R&D team designed a deliberately melatonin-free stack around four evidence-backed ingredients: magnesium glycinate for a gentle, well-tolerated mineral base, L-theanine to ease mental chatter at lights-out, apigenin as a calming botanical, and glycine to support a smoother transition into rest. We tuned the magnesium to the glycinate form specifically because it is easier on the stomach than oxide or citrate, a detail that matters when people take it nightly for a year.
We engineered the blend into a compact, easy-swallow capsule rather than a horse-pill or a sugary gummy, then sized the nightly serving so the founder could position it honestly as a calm wind-down rather than a sedative knockout. Every production lot went through our stability protocol and was third-party tested for identity and purity, with Certificates of Analysis the brand could publish directly on its product pages to do the trust-building work the audience demanded.
Because the entire business hinged on reorders, we built the lineup as a subscription-friendly trio instead of a single hero SKU, giving the founder a low-commitment entry product, a daily wind-down, and a complete nightly stack to upsell into. We delivered FDA-compliant label copy and reviewed every structure-function claim so the brand could talk credibly about supporting restful sleep and a non-habit-forming routine without straying into territory it could not defend, and we held the initial run to a startup-sized MOQ so she could validate the offer before scaling.
The brand launched its melatonin-free trio in late summer 2025, leading every product page with the phrase its audience had been waiting to hear: deep sleep without the morning fog. The melatonin-free angle, paired with publishable third-party COAs, became the conversion engine, lifting direct-to-consumer checkout conversion 38% over the founder's pre-launch landing-page benchmark as visitors stopped bouncing at the ingredient panel.
Retention was the number that mattered, and it held. By month six the subscription program was retaining 65% of its members, nearly double the roughly 35% typical of DTC supplement subscriptions, and subscribers grew to 71% of total revenue, turning a fragile new brand into a predictable recurring-revenue business. The complete Sleep Stack PM carried a 73% reorder rate, validating the decision to build an upsell trio rather than a single SKU.
Crucially, the founder reported almost no churn tied to the failure mode she had built the brand to solve: customer surveys flagged "morning grogginess" in under 4% of responses, against the melatonin-product complaints that had inspired the company. The brand has since moved from its validation MOQ to recurring five-figure production runs and is partnering with Build Your Own Brand on a fourth nighttime SKU for 2026.
